Nail Conditions

The nail (onyx) consists of 90% hard protein (keratin), trace elements, organic elements (such as iron, manganese, selenium, etc.), lipids, and water. It is formed from a fold of skin that overcovers the nail-bearing phalanx and is supported by a part of the epidermis to which it is well attached, protecting the tissues of the feet and hands.

Anatomically, a normal nail consists of the following:

Eponychium
Lunula
Free edge
Lateral folds
Blood vessels

What affects the growth of a nail?
Nail growth starts from the matrix, with nails growing about 0.1 mm per day on average. The growth rate of the nail depends on age, heredity, health condition (chronic diseases, medication intake, hormonal disorders, etc.), season, and the individual’s lifestyle (activities, manual labor, diet, etc.).

Why should we frequently observe our nails?
The good condition of a nail (smooth surface, uniform color, without damage) indicates that our health appears to be at satisfactory levels. On the contrary, certain types of nail discoloration, swelling, or a change in thickness may signal a potential problem in vital organs.

How are nail conditions treated?
There are many effective therapeutic treatment methods. The dermatologist will determine the most appropriate treatment technique based on the etiology, symptoms, and clinical picture of the nail.
